Fishin' trips

With Zoie Larkins

I got put on this show by chance, Muench forgot that I was in the classroom and they needed someone to interview. Since I had experience on camera and every other group already had four people, I was thrown in. The first day was a hot mess, people forgot to bring what they were supposed, talk to who they were supposed to, or even show up on time. I got to enjoy the grand thrill of sitting around waiting for other people to fix their mistakes to put together a half decent shoot. That day, we got amazing B roll but the interview was extremely sub par. Nick neglected to prepare questions so there wasn't much said, I mentioned my favorite food and in limited detail, my travels to the Middle East. Since we did everything wrong, the next shoot was much better. Nick and I did a walk and talk before the shoot and I told him what he should ask me when we were on camera and gave him some tips on how to ask good questions during an interview. He was still struggling so Muench put me on as the writer for the show. We learned how to use lab mics and how to sync the audio to the video. We set out the next day much more prepared than the first. However, we neglected to location scout before we went to the location to film and we learned when we got there that we would be unable to get any really quality shots. But at least we had all our equipment this time! I already knew from previous experience but being the talent is a lot of waiting and having very little control over the shoot. That was hard for me to sit around and watch people mess up even though I had the chance to learn from their mistakes without making them. I also had the benefit of learning lab mics long before anyone else and how to make a nice crisp sound. I also learned how to speak even when I didn't have a question to go off of. How to talk about somewhat interesting things about my life without any direction. We're quickly learning exactly what not to do so that this show can grow into everything that it has the potential to be.
